Can Rick Perry Beat Himself?

It's been clear for many moons now that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison lacks the vision, the oomph and the time—too busy single-handedly turning back health-care reform and cap-and-trade, you know—to mount the kind of campaign that might topple a sitting governor in her own party.

But with five weeks left before the primary election, there are reasons to wonder whether Gov. Perry just might be capable of doing the job himself.

On the heels of his clownish, abysmal performance in the first GOP debate—which allowed libertarian Debra Medina to turn herself into a serious contender for far-right votes—Perry is suffering from another self-inflicted wound.

This one hit on Sunday, when The Dallas Morning News unleashed the single most embarrassing expose of the campaign so far. The headline spoke volumes: "Exclusive: Perry voter turnout project signs up felons."

I can hear Medina and Barbie now in the next debate "Perry must have hired ACORN" "The only jobs Perry's creating - are jobs for ACORN". It will be ACORN, ACORN, ACORN for the full hour.:grr:

Perry is such an ass. Yes we hope he does beat himself. But never count the idiot down. He's about to throw millions of corporate dollars into the mix.

Is Perry gearing up for an independent expenditure campaign?

The ink was hardly dry on the Supreme Court opinion before the Texas Ethics Commission gave its blessing to independent expenditure advertising:

(It is our position that corporations are allowed to make all types of direct campaign expenditures (referred to in Citizens United as independent expenditures).

A normal person would view this as simply a routine statement that the law has changed. On the other hand, the rapidity of the announcement, and the governor’s control over all state agencies, might cause a veteran political observer to wonder if something is in the works, namely that Perry wants the Ethics Commission’s statement on the record pronto so that he can take advantage of the new rules of American politics as quickly as possible.

A pox on all corporations giving Perry money directly. :puke:

Gov. Perry creates jobs for Texas felons

Beyond that, the program has become a money-making opportunity, especially for those with extensive social networking profiles. Some may be in it more for the cash than the candidate. For instance, one lists herself as a Facebook fan of President Barack Obama, an unlikely political pairing.

Well maybe she's, you know, just another disillusioned Democrat.

Let me clarify something - I do want felons to get good jobs and be given a second chance. They have paid their dues to society and a job helps them reintegrate with society. The problem with the Perry program is that it's essentially a ponzi scheme taking advantage of people. One "recruiter" has been paid $34K. You know there's a lot of pressure being applied to the "people being recruited to make calls" and "pledged voters" to say they will vote for Perry.

Here's how the program, known as Perry Home Headquarters, works:

1. Volunteers are asked to recruit friends and neighbors, who are called Perry Home Headquarters.

2. The "headquarters" pledge in turn to recruit 11 more people to vote for Perry in the March primary.

3. The initial volunteers get $20 for each Perry Home Headquarter recruited, plus another $20 for every 11 voters each headquarter signs up to vote in the primary. The campaign has recently quit paying out for the recruitment of an additional headquarter.
