Did you see what she was spending campaign money on?
AAS 1/27/10Political Notes: Medina defends use of campaign money for clothing
Medina defends using campaign cash to spruce up her wardrobeGOP gubernatorial candidate Debra Medina said Tuesday that she used campaign dollars on clothing "because I'm a poor small-business provider not usually wardrobed like people would expect a gubernatorial candidate to be wardrobed."
Her comments came during a meeting with the Austin American-Statesman editorial board. News reporters (who do not participate in editorial board decisions about which candidates the newspaper will endorse) regularly sit in on editorial board meetings with candidates.
A report filed with the Texas Ethics Commission shows that Medina spent nearly $2,500 on clothing between July and December. The Dallas Morning News reported on the spending Tuesday.
State law generally prohibits public officials from spending campaign funds for personal use. And a Texas Ethics Commission advisory opinion says that political contributions can be used to pay for clothing only if the clothing "is not adaptable to general use as ordinary clothing." That opinion says that a tuxedo rented for a legislative gala is OK.
Although to be fair, her crack in the interview about only wealthy people being able to run for office in Texas, or people like Rick Perry who continues to draw a salary whether he works or not, is accurate.
I wonder how the Kinkster is reporting on spending.
