I won't deny White my vote in November. He's been a very effective administrator for the city. All that you may have read about him working with Republicans on Houston city council is also true; my councilwoman -- who was once chief of staff for Cong. Bill Archer, who was Ways and Means chairman not so long ago -- praised White to the skies. She even said that one of the reasons she ran for council was so that she could see firsthand what his leadership style was like.
White might be the best governor this state has had in a very long time. But he has all the charisma of a rutabaga, he's just this side of a Republican himself (really,
it's hard to tell the difference between him and Kay Bailey) and he resists every single thing the Texas progressives suggest, stand for, or proffer. He can also be arrogant and condescending, like most wealthy people who might actually be smarter than you (not just believe that they are).
He's not even trying to reach out in the primary, for Pete's sake.
And none of that natural-born Methodist conservatism of his and working hard to cultivate and mollify Republicans much, much more than progressives does anything for his election prospects with the TeaBaggers, who call him "Sanctuary Bill" and "Blood on his Hands" Bill and the usual stream of vomitus. Unfortunately I think he stands as much chance of defeating Governor MoFo as does Kay Bailey at this point. He simply doesn't -- and worse, won't go out of his way to -- energize the base.
