Rasmussen: Perry 49%, White 43%
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections2/election_2010/election_2010_governor_elections/texas/election_2010_texas_governor

Fresh off his resounding Republican primary victory Tuesday, Texas Governor Rick Perry now finds himself in a close general election contest with Democratic nominee Bill White. Voters have mixed feelings, too, whether Perry's top GOP challenger, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, should remain in the Senate.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in Texas finds Perry leading White, the popular former mayor of Houston, by just six points, 49% to 43%. Three percent (3%) opt for some other candidate, and six percent (6%) are undecided.

Late last month, Perry led White 47% to 41%, after leading by nine points earlier in February. Just after White first announced his candidacy in January, he trailed Perry 50% to 40%.

Perry holds an eight-point lead among men in Texas but leads by just four points among women. Voters not affiliated with either major party favor Perry 46% to 40%.

-snip-

White's inching closer and closer to Perry.

1. If Rasmussen shows it this close
you can probably safely say they're at least dead even and maybe even White up by a point, maybe 2.

2. I agree this is going to get a lot tighter later this summer
Perry has no solutions to anything and the wave of that huge budget hole is getting closer to slamming full on into Texas. White needs to keep talking up that budget hole since Perry has backed himself into a corner and pretended it doesn't exist. He's lying to the people of Texas when he says he won't raise taxes. He doesn't have a choice. He's going to be a weasel and call them "fees" but he has to find 12-15 billion somewhere.

White has a better chance if he's straight with Texans. Plus he will have a better relationship with the Obama administration to get more stimulus money into Texas. Perry doesn't want any of it.
