Anyone else have USAA homeowners/car insurance?
I live south of Houston and have been with USAA for almost 20 years.
Not anymore. My homeowners insurance has been raised 18%, 21%, and 24% over the last three years.
I found another company, Armed Forces Insurance that provides more coverage for $1000 less. I am done with USAA.

Anyone else seen outrageous rates from USAA? I think they are just pricing me out of the area.

I've been with USAA for almost 20 years. Prior to Rick Perry's insurance reform of 2003, USAA really was the best insurance in the country. Premiums were relatively low ($795), deductibles were low ($500), and coverage was comprehensive including foundation, water, and sewage. Premium increases were reasonable. Thanks to the reforms of 2003, my premiums are now $2800, deductibles are $4800, and I have less coverage. Because I had auto insurance with USAA the premium included a $500 discount in homeowners insurance. But that is about to change.

1. I've got term life with them but that's it.
Those premiums are fixed for 20 years.

Those homeowners' premium increases are ridiculous - I'd dump them too.

2. Hi JohnCoby!
I live in Central Texas, north of the Austin area. You might check out Foremost Insurance. My homeowners insurance with them costs about $620 a year for my 2800 sq ft house that appraised at $103,000 last year. Good luck insurance shopping! :hi:

3. I will probably go with Armed Forces Insurance
I need to fix my roof before they will provide coverage.
Now I need to get auto insurance. Turns out that GEICO misquoted me by 50%!!!

So I am stuck with USAA for now.

4. We left GEICO for the same reason you left USAA
Jacking up premiums for no reason. The crowning touch was when I was insurance shopping on the web and GEICO quoted $40 less a month than they were ALREADY CHARGING US!!!!

5. I have Progressive auto
Switched about a year ago from Farmers. I'm almost ready to renew my homeowners and will get my agent with Progressive to check out rates before I renew with Farmers for that.

6. That's odd. We just changed to USAA from a famous Conn. company.
The homeowners is about half what the Conn. company was charging with a better deductible. Auto insurance is about the same.

The reason we changed was last year we had a lightening strike and had a big claim. The Conn. company has not paid all the claims and it's now with a lawyer. I can find anybody who will take my my insurance premiums, the real test is when it comes to paying a claim.

7. I have been with AMICA for 40 years. They have my life
insurance, my home insurance, my auto insurance and (when I had one) my sailboat insurance.

They are very conservative on who they insure--won't cover household liability if you have an "aggressive breed of dog" i.e. Shepard, Dobie etc. They won't insure my motorcycle but referred me to another company. They wouldn't insure my power boat because it had more than 100 hp.

They are a mutual company and that means that they are owned by the policy holders. You literally own the company. Any money not spent on paying claims, running the company and maintaining the reserves set by law is returned to the insured in the form of a "dividend" or more literally a rebate.

I have never in 40 years had a problem with a claim or coverage. Only once did they say anything to me about raising my rates because of a claim and that was because it was the third claim on the same bathroom for water damage.

They're in the phone book.

8. Ameriprise through Costco...
I was amazed at the difference...$500 a year on auto. You have to have the executive membership at Costco to apply, but the difference is amazing and it's an A rated company.

9. Anyone else have USAA homeowners/car insurance?
I have multi line insurance (car, home, trailer, and umbrella) with The Hartford (http://hartfordauto.com) for a long long time now! Each year I shop around and come back to them as the discounts and additional benefits they provide make a very competitive deal. Two claims have been taken care of well and fairly quick. IMHO don’t look at just the rates quoted; check claim history, service, additional benefits provided and the take an informed decision.
