Rick Perry's decision to keep a $23,500 campaign contribution from a major donor charged by the state with fraud isn't the first time the Republican governor has had to make a choice about tainted political donations. Perry says he'll keep, at least for now, the money he received in February from TaxMaster's CEO Patrick Cox of Houston. Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott filed suit Thursday against Cox and TaxMasters, accusing the tax-representation firm of defrauding customers. A Perry spokesman said the campaign will monitor things "until an outcome is determined." I reported about it here today.
In the 2002 race for governor, Perry said much the same thing in the case of $200,000 in Enron contributions. After the collapse of the energy giant, a Perry spokesman said there was nothing wrong with taking the money and thus no reason to give it back. Five months later, in May 2002, Perry did an about face and returned $85,000 in Enron money. An aide said the rest had been spent. Later that year, Perry returned $10,000 from WorldCom after it reported cooking the books in a massive accounting fraud.
