Gov. Rick Perry won't meet with editorial boards before November's election, spokesman Mark Miner says -- the same decision he made before the GOP primary.

"It's a a better use of the governor's time to to talk directly to the people of Texas," Miner said. "One of the most important aspects of a campaign is time."

Miner said that Perry will "continue talking to the media," both mainstream media and using social media to get out his message.

"He's in front of the press every day," Miner said.

AUSTIN — Suggesting his opponent has something to hide, Gov. Rick Perry said Thursday he will not budge on his refusal to debate unless Democrat Bill White releases more income tax returns.

The Republican governor said he will not meet with newspaper editorial boards, either - the same approach he took in the GOP primary.

White hit back, saying his financial records are more readily available than Perry's and that he will be happy to debate an empty chair if necessary. He said Perry's "handlers" simply do not want him to answer questions.

"They're engaged in a game of 'chicken' right now. We'll see who blinks first," said political scientist Bruce Buchanan of the University of Texas at Austin.

The media is already demanding Perry debate. I've seen editorials from KPRC (NBC affiliate) here in Houston and a newspaper op-ed in Beaumont doing the same. He cannot fade the heat from refusing. We're going to have one debate on a Friday night in October, just like in the past.

14. Perry shortchanges voters by refusing to debate

As he sought his first full term in office, Perry saw value in discussing ideas and sharing his vision with voters. So he pressed Democrat Tony Sanchez to share the stage with him.

Unfortunately, Rick Perry, the 2010 candidate for governor, has an entirely different view. Zero debates would seem to suit the state's longest-serving governor just fine.

Perry so far has refused to schedule a face-to-face encounter with Democrat Bill White, preferring instead to make unrelated demands before deigning to discuss a debate. While this initially appeared to be standard political posturing, the Republican governor seems increasingly at ease with the idea of the first debate-free campaign season in 20 years.

15. Perry is not a leader - he's a political hack

While ducking debates might be a defensible political strategy, ultimately, it's lousy leadership. Perry is seeking an unprecedented 14 years in the state's highest office, and Texans deserve the chance to hear more details about his plans for the next four years.

A steady stream of canned stump speeches delivered to partisan crowds won't suffice.

He treats this state and the voters like his own little personal dominion. And frankly even Republicans should be demanding answers from the little dictator.
