The Houston Chronicle Endorses Bill White for governor of Texas.
Edited on Sun Sep-19-10 04:51 PM by sonias
Houston Chronicle 9/18/10

Time for a change
The Chronicle endorses former Houston Mayor Bill White for governor of Texas.

Texas faces an unprecedented budget deficit estimated at $21 billion, faltering health care and public education systems, and demands for new energy sources and transportation funding. For nearly a decade, Rick Perry — the longest-serving governor in Lone Star history — has been at the helm of an increasingly wayward ship.

Texas can't afford four more years of Perry's leadership.

The governor has shown a distaste for dealing with budget details, fobbing them off on the Legislature and even suggesting in a recent news conference that Comptroller Susan Combs had better uses of her time than issuing deficit projections.

Fortunately, voters have the opportunity to replace Republican Perry with former Houston Mayor Bill White, a Democrat with credentials as a successful lawyer, corporate CEO and public servant who demonstrated his management capabilities and hard-work ethic during a six-year tenure at City Hall.

As he did in Houston, White can bring innovative financial solutions, a passion for environmental protection, and a strong bipartisan and ethical commitment to a governor's office tarnished by charges of cronyism, partisanship and catering to contributors at the expense of constituents.

1. Let's wave 'Bye Bye' to Ricky Chicky Chicky!
Republican dirty tricks are going to continue to be even more obnoxious in Harris County in attempts to suppress turnout. As much as I HATE black box voting machines, I still doubt that recent fire was not a planned action to minimize voting where White is strong. :hi:

5. We're on the same page
That was the first thing I thought when I heard that they won't have the same number of machines as before according to Beverly Kaufman.
Houston Chronicle 8/28/10
Officials scramble after fire destroys vote machines
(snip)
"Because I don't expect to have 10,000 pieces to work with, no matter what we do, I'm sure that we're going to be putting on a full-court press urging people to vote early," Kaufman said.

(snip)
It can collapse the number of polling places, but that would require a huge education effort to let voters know where to report on Election Day, he said.

Democrats concerned

It also would bring protests from Democrats.

"The important thing here is that the Republicans who control county government and all election administration functions do not reduce the number of polling sites or do anything that would make it harder or less convenient for Harris County voters to participate in this critical election," said Anthony Gutierrez, deputy executive director of the Texas Democratic Party.

So what precincts get machine number cut backs? The suspicious person in me says, the minority precincts that vote heavily Democratic. The areas where transportation is an issue so they vote on election day.

So how is Harris helping voters get to early voting locations? No plan has been mentioned to date.

6. You nailed it! Not having a plan for early voting is part of the plan.

IS THE TDP Challenging Harris County on this? If not, why not? We Know this is happening now and going to continue to happen in areas where White is strong. No one should be able to claim surprise. What are our lawyers doing about this? After the fact will be too late.

4. Very appropriate
That's how I think of him too. He thinks he's king of Texas. That he's inherited the position. That he answers to no one. :grr:

Lets kick the little dictator out of the people's house - the Governor's Mansion. :kick:
Which by the way burned on his watch.
