Proposed Texas immigration law contains convenient loophole for ‘the help’

Texas has long been a hotbed of controversy on immigration issues. And a proposed immigration bill in the Texas state House is sure to raise more than a few eyebrows. The bill would make hiring an "unauthorized alien" a crime punishable by up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine, unless that is, they are hired to do household chores.

Yes, under the House Bill 2012 introduced by a tea party favorite state Rep. Debbie Riddle -- who's been saying for some time that she'd like to see Texas institute an Arizona-style immigration law -- hiring an undocumented maid, caretaker, lawnworker or any type of houseworker would be allowed. Why? As Texas state Rep. Aaron Pena, also a Republican, told CNN, without the exemption, "a large segment of the Texas population" would wind up in prison if the bill became law.

1. Sounds like it is institutionalizing a second class relationship
Guess the Pukes learned their lessons from all of their candidates who got busted for hiring undocumented workers at below living wage rates.

2. The Debbie "Lou Dobbs" Riddle Loophole exemption
The rumor going around is that Debbie may have the same problem Lou Dobbs had with his horse stables - you know hiring immigrants while he bashed them nightly on his TV show on CNN. Why of course she doesn't mean that any laws would possibly apply to her. Well of course not! :eyes:

The Texas Observer 2/28/11
(by Sara Inés Calderón FromNewsTaco, where this blog was first published.)

Texas: No Hiring Of Immigrants—Except For Maids

Ah, Texas, my adopted homeland. There’s so much to love about you, but then you do silly things like this, and so everyone thinks you’re insane. One of the most recent anti-immigrant bills to come out of the Legislature basically makes it illegal to not use super duper verification systems to make sure your workers are legal, but maids are okay. The Texas Tribune reported:

(snip)
There is also an exception for domestic help. People who hire or contract with someone for work “exclusively or primarily at a single-family residence” are off the hook…

This, according to the report, is probably because Riddle herself owns horse ranches and hasn’t verified whether the people she hires are “legal” to work — how very Lou Dobbs of her! If you recall, Lou Dobbs, the guy whose schtick consisted of bashing immigrants for years, was recently discovered to be doing the very same thing Riddle is afraid of. I guess it doesn’t count as “illegal hiring” when you just don’t care, I mean, know.

:puke: on Debbie!

6. The 2 people who work for me for the past 10 years are
legal. It was one of the first questions I asked. She speaks from the usual repuke philosophy. What is good for me is okay. Seriously, how could such a law be legal? Can't everyone just claim a second job of mopping some rw person's floors and then be exempt?

4. More of the Riddle hypocrisy ....
CNN 3/2/11
Texas immigration bill has big exception

(snip)
In a interview with the Texas Tribune, Riddle's chief of staff, Jon English, explained that the exception was to avoid "stifling the economic engine" in Texas.
"It is an admittedly clumsy first attempt to say, 'We are really focusing on the big businesses,'" English said. Texans shouldn't be punished for hiring lawn care companies who hire unauthorized immigrants, he said, according to the Texas Tribune's website.

Ah ha you see, Riddle will acknowledge that immigratnts are part of the crucial "economic engine" of Texas and that cheap labor is so crucial at the "maid and yard work" level. But damn those big businesses that aggregate that "economic engine labor"!. Don't they know that just makes the wages of these cheap laborers go up! And then people like Debbie would just have to pay more for the hired help around the house! :grr:  :puke:

She and Leo Berman both are inhabitants of the planet Hate and nothing, and I do mean nothing would faze them one bit. On the other hand those kinds of emotions could do you some damage. I would advise you not to stoop to their level. Just saying

9. Sent it anyway. Here it is:
Title: Hypocrisy or House Bill 2012
Message: "Punish those who hire illegal immigrants unless they are helping me and my Republican supporters." This is the real interpretation of your proposed legislation. You make me ashamed to be a 5th generation Texan. This bill is about using other humans to promote your own self interest. What a hypocrite you are.

13. Let's look at this realistically.
The conservanazi republiklans are not going to do anything other than help their corporate masters achieve all that they want which is no taxes, no regulation and the cheapest labor possible.

If you think they are going to enforce labor and immigration laws, think again. It ain't gonna happen.

15. Unfortunately we can't rely on reality in Texas
I know you're essentially correct that business will not comply or go along with this easily since cheap labor is vital to them.

However, I wouldn't put it past the Lege to actually pass the bill. The bill would just give them the right to selective enforcement - racial profiling if you will. The only businesses that will get investigated, charged etc will minority owned businesses - because you know they're the ones importing the "hordes of illegals".

I'm just saying reality and perceived reality are two whole different states in Texas.

We best kill the bill before they start thinking of concentration camp tent cities for immigrants. That's the next step - it's already on their radar. :(

14. Illegal-hiring bill spurs jest and jeers
Houston Chronicle 3/4/11
Illegal-hiring bill spurs jest and jeers
Legislation would exempt punishment for family employers

A proposed immigration law being cast in jest across the country as a way for Texans to rid the work force of illegal immigrants while protecting their low-paid nannies and gardeners drew serious concern Thursday from advocates who fear the bill could have a chilling effect across the state.

(snip)
"House Bill 1202 has just really created an uproar in our community," said Laura Murillo, president of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Riddle "makes an exception for those that might clean her own house or take care of her children. If you can't read between those lines, I don't know what lines you can read between."

Murillo called the bill inhumane and other advocates suggested that it could have serious civil rights ramifications for people of all races and immigration statuses.
"It has an element of 'as long as you know your place,' " said Clarissa Martinez De Castro, director of immigration for the National Council of La Raza.

(snip)
Employers already face fines and sanctions for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants under the federal Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. The Supreme Court is now considering whether Arizona's new employment law, for example, is pre-empted by the federal act.
