Jeffy Gets His Gun

Wentworth Gets a Win for Campus Carry

Sen. Jeff Wentworth is relentless, and today, the San Antonio Republican got his way.

Wentworth finally got his campus carry bill successfully tacked onto legislation — this time a bill by Sen. Steve Ogden, R-Bryan, that would reform methods of finance for public and higher education institutions. The measure is turning into a virtual Christmas Tree for amendments.

Wentworth's measure would would allow concealed handgun license holders to carry on university campuses. Wentworth filed his own bill, SB 354, to do so, but he could not secure enough votes to bring the legislation up for debate on the Senate floor. Over the last couple of weeks, he repeatedly tried to tack a similar amendment onto a bill by Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, to eliminate some college reporting requirements and reduce administrative costs. But Zaffirini killed her own bill after Wentworth's amendment passed.

Zaffirini got her own reporting bill tacked onto Ogden's measure today, before Wentworth offered his amendment. Then the two senators went at it, with Zaffirini asking Wentworth if he was aware of the 1966 Charles Whitman shooting on the University of Texas campus, and Wentworth countering that he was there when it happened. Zaffirini was there, too. Wentworth then pointed to the Virginia Tech shooting to support his view that campus carry would protect students.

Zaffirini argued the amendment could possibly cost millions of dollars to universities over the years. "This is clearly an unfunded mandate," she said, citing costs for additional storage for weapons, insurance, security and law enforcement. But Wentworth said his amendment would make the state liable if universities raise insurance rates because students are allowed to carry guns on campus, and universities would at most have to pay for extra storage space.

Wild, wild Texas! Yee Haw!!! :eyes:

If only Wentworth was this relentless on something that way really crucial to his constituents during this budget crisis. As one of his constituents - I am not impressed. The Universities across the state of Texas were almost completely unified against this bill.
:grr:

1. Wonder which of his profs at A&M he wanted to kill, but couldn't?
Stupid man.

When someone gets killed as a result of this stupid law, I want his ass dragged to the funeral and be made to apologize to every friend and family member of the deceased until each and every one of them is satisfied.

Stupid.

2. Stupid, stupid, stupid
He would not even allow the campuses to opt out? Why shouldn't it be left to the students and the universities to decide?

3. Bravo!
I'm part of a rare breed: Pro RKBA and liberal.

I'm glad this is moving forward.

On the other hand, it's my understanding private institutions will be able to opt out...Bummer.

4. When I discussed this type bill with the rabid gunnut conservanazis
I always like to bring up one item. I say I support the idea of concealed carry. Now, if you support it, then it's probably because you have strong feelings about protection, the right to bear arms and law and order. So, I'd like to add one item to that bill. If you commit a criminal act, felony or misdemeanor, while carrying, you should get an extra 5-10 years tacked on that sentence and it not run concurrent. You should see them explode. Then, I say, well, so much for law and order right?

Wentworth: Campus-carry may be dead

Updated at 12:56 p.m. with reaction from House Speaker Joe Straus:

State Sen. Jeff Wentworth, the Senate author of the controversial bill to allow concealed handguns in campus buildings, this morning declared the bill as possibly dead for this legislative session.

(snip)
The House late yesterday had sent a bill containing the campus-carry provisions back to the Senate to strip off those provisions, ruling that they were not germane to the bill to which Wentworth added them several weeks ago.

(snip)
“It’s looking pretty bleak at this point,” Wentworth said. “It’s an open secret that Speaker Straus did not support this legislation … I think (the House action late Thursday) is because undue influence was brought to bear by the presiding officer of the House.

(snip)
Responding in a statement, Straus suggested that Wentworth should bone up on House rules that got his campus-carry amendment knocked off.

“Having been a member of the Legislature for over 20 years, my good friend, Jeff should know the rules better,” he said. “I understand he had difficulty in passing his bill in the Senate, but as a former House member, I’m sure he is aware of how we enforce the two-subject rule against Senate bills.”

Oh snap! Straus' :spank: Wentworth!

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

6. Wentworth accuses Straus of killing campus carry [Updated]

Wentworth accuses Straus of killing campus carry
A state senator is accusing House Speaker Joe Straus of purposely killing off a bill allowing concealed handguns in college classrooms.

The so-called campus carry bill appeared to die for good last night, after a state representative used a parliamentary tactic called a point of order.

State Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, the lead proponent of the measure in the Senate, said the decision to uphold the point of order "defied common sense."

"It should not have been upheld…and I am of the mind that the Speaker was following political motivations than parliamentary ones," Wentworth said.

7. Way to go Representative Mike Villareal!
Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, called his point of order, declaring that the bill shouldn't be considered because the amendment was about a different subject than the main bill.

Mike Villareal :spank: Wentworth too!

Funny thing is that all of them Villareal, Straus and Wentworth are from San Antonio.

And little Mikey picked Jeffy's gun amendment off!:rofl::rofl:
