I am not a native, nor do I live in Utah today, but I did live there for several years during the 90s. It holds a very dear place in my heart still. I loved living in Utah. I wish the state had a more balanced scene politically, but maybe in time this can happen. I lived in SLC as well as Provo. What I loved best is the ability to leave the city, drive up into the mountains, and in only a few short minutes be totally removed from civilization. It was so relaxing to be able to get out of the city like that. Now I'm sick for Utah. Maybe one day I'll be back and help the Democrats out.
Who else from DU is a Utah resident or former resident?

I went to USU in Logan for more years than I care to admit. I also lived in Orem for a year.
I loved USU. Still miss it. However I do not miss the very Conservative population:) Even at USU its becoming BYUish. They recently had a repulican "protect marriage" day on campus.

I'm here in lovely SLC. I'm an ex-mormon athiest progressive leftist. We need to have some discussions about Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennet! Lets turn over the rock of Utah politics and see what disgusting crawlies are underneath! The Right-Wing "Master Plan" explained:http://www.zmag.org/chomsky/sam/sam-contents.html

There have been quite a few over the years! I'm sure there are many out there. I mean there's got to be, we elected Rocky Anderson twice! :)
It always makes me laugh at how people think SLC is a conservative mecca. NOT even close. :) We've got a nice little island of liberalism in a sea of conservatism.

Tie dye checking in. We moved here from California (O.C.) We are not the kind of people that let a religion come between us and our neighbors! I like it here, kids like it but put up with a lot of abuse.
I think mormons are republicans mostly now because we have been living in a time when it is very easy to trick people by media. As people find out more... There is a resistance to learning about gays or abortion or any other wedge issues. I also find it highly ironic that people that are pro-life are pro-war. But that is the racial factor coming into play. There is undeniably a white male supremacy issue here that is difficult to shake.
KRCL.org or KRCL 90.9 are media sources where liberal ideas are encouraged and the marketplace of ideas is expanded.

Growing up I never really heard abuse about being Catholic. Though I've lived in Salt Lake City my whole life, I'm guessing it's a lot different for kids out in the 'burbs.

Nice to know there's another Dead fan in Utah. I'll be moving there in a few months from CO. How's the local music scene? I've been the the venue "Suede," and it's not too bad.

Lived in SLC for awhile during the Clinton era.
I still pass thru there sometimes.
Good things I remember: * KRCL * Gay-lesbian community center just north of downtown * The Wasatch Mountains!! Hiking and snowshoeing. * Moab and the canyon country * Radio stations big on 80s retro shows * Great restaurants. One named after D.B. Cooper if I recall. * Some of the right wingies in Utah are more libertarian than conservative, and are not on board with the Repuke agenda. One guy stands out, Ken Larsen (sp?) who liked to stir up trouble including staging a protest group called the "Church of the Hemp Goddess" at a state Repuke convention. Jack Stockwell on KTKK was another good one, last time I drove through SLC he was blasting away at Dick Cheney. * SLC has a lot of labor movement history. Too much of it is not well known today but it should be. * Some independent newspapers with an anti-establishment streak. Is the "Salt Lake Observer" still going? * The whole area east of downtown from the university and the Avenues south to Sugarhouse seemed pretty liberal. * Rocky Anderson. I hear he's now the mayor. * It was the Clinton era. The right wing seemed like they were divided and desparate, while the economy was great back then. It was a much better time, that in retrospect seems like the calm before the storm. Nuff said.
Bad things I remember: * Too cliquish. LDS vs non-LDS, etc. * Stupid liquor laws. "A private club for members", indeed. * All the liberal stuff going on in SLC aside, conservative Repukes still dominated state politics. * The skiing and snowboarding was fun but had some bad experiences with the snob element on the slopes. Maybe they thought they were in Aspen to be seen among the rich and famous, and didn't like us riff-raff on their slopes? * Orem. Provo. BYU. The Osmonds... * It's a (freaking) right to work state. Nuff said.

I grew up in Bountiful and lived there until I was 21. I was baptized Mormon but was never religious (I'm an Atheist). They would probably excommunicate me if they could find me (my mom refuses to give them my forwarding address). Besides being an Atheist, I am gay and I smoke and drink (I'm going to hell four times...I'll save you a seat by the fire). My parents escaped and are now retired in Mesquite, Nevada but my liberal sister lives in Sugar House and my conservative brother lives in Kaysville. After living in Utah, Denver, Central Illinois, and France, I now live in the beautiful wine country of Sonoma County, California with my partner of 13 years and our two dogs. :hi:

Born and raised in SLC, moved away for 10 years for a job, (based out of Atlanta, GA), came back in '95 and couldn't stand it in the valley anymore. Now I live in the tiny town of Coalville, up in the mountains on the "Wasatch Back" about 15 minutes on I-80 north east of Park City. (It's very BLUE up here, for Utah!)
Laura Bonham is a good friend, we live around the corner from each other.

Although I work at the Salt Lake City Library and take classes at the U, I was born, raised and still make my home in Murray, Utah. Something in the water out here makes us fiercely proud of our piece of suburbia. I know crime isn't cool, but ever since I read in a D-News piece that Murray had the crime rate per capita in the state I've taken to bragging about how "hard and tough" M-Town really is. Also pretty progressive for a suburb; We have a lot of bars (relatively) and I'm VERY proud of the fact that Murray High (my alma matter) has elected a mentally handicapped girl homecoming queen and a lesbian couple "cutest couple" for the yearbook.

I was born and raised in Holladay and went to Olympus, but I lived for a time in the 80's in my own apartment on Regal Street. (The ones just north of where Uncle Albert's used to be... that was great! Stumbling distance from the bar - LOL!)

Born in Cali, moved to Utah as a kid (my, how unusual)... Honestly, all petty bickering aside, I LOVE UTAH!!
There are an awful lot of us Gunn McKay/Scott Matheson Democrats here - not too left, not too right, just about right.
If Utah Democrats ruled the national party, we'd still be in power...

I'll be moving from Colorado to the Park City area in about two months. I've got to admit I'm apprehensive about moving to the reddest red state in the nation, but as a mountaineer, I'm stoked for easy access to great climbing and skiing.
I'll be going to the U of U for Law School. It's good to hear that I won't be the ONLY progressive person in the state! Oh - I'm not Mormon (actually an atheist).
Take Care,
Ed

I met my husband on State Street 23 years ago! He was fresh out of Basic Training. I was a good Mormon girl and he was a bad, nonmormon boy. I haven't lived in Salt Lake for 21 years, but sometimes I long for the mountians. I miss the city too. I love the way it is layed out in a grid. It is the most easily navigated city I have ever been in.
