Cuccinelli Urging Pastors To Speak Out PoliticallyFREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Virginia Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli is urging pastors to speak out politically.
Cuccinelli told Fredericksburg-area clergy Thursday that they shouldn't be afraid to speak out about candidates and issues. They just need to be careful to avoid outright endorsements that could jeopardize their churches' tax-exempt status.
The Republican made his remarks at a "Christian Citizenship and Godly Government" breakfast. About 250 church leaders attended the event sponsored by the conservative Virginia Christian Alliance. Cuccinelli said it's not unusual for Christians to shy away from politics because they consider it dirty. He said when church leaders do that, "you just left the field to the other side."
