WA-08 election question . Sorry to make another thread, but ...

I can't find anyone who knows the answer to it and I really want to know.

Can someone tell me why it takes so long to report the results?
Sorry I'm not from WA or familiar with the area, and I don't know if or any flooding was effect in this district, but it seems like they are really taking a really long time to report district number. It took 1 day to get from 41% to 59% of precincts to report.

All the major national newscasts as well as WA SOS website are only reporting amount so far. 11/09

R Dave REICHERT 77,597 51%
D Darcy BURNER 74,861 49%
Total ~150,000


Here are the results in 2004 election:

Dave Ross(D) 157,148 46.7009%
Dave Reichert(R) 173,298 51.5003%

1. They have to wait for absentee ballots that were mailed.

King County (largest and Dem) has 125,000 today, with about 76,000 counted. They expect more tomorrow with results by 6 PM Thursday.

Pierce County (Big and Red) are waiting until tomorrow night to report their absentees. They give no number of current ballots in hand.

It doesn't look good for Burner (D), but it's still very close.

2. Accuracy, here is an article from Seattle Times

think they want to count the votes that were postmarked election day. It can take a day or 2 to get through mail. Most counties are now absentee/mail in balloting, though you can drop them off at various places also.

The King County elections division says it prefers to count votes slowly, even if that means posting some of the slowest results in the nation on election night.

By midnight Tuesday, the county had counted only 38.2 percent of all poll-vote results. A few years ago, the count would have been wrapping up by that time.

The county posted results from 96 percent of precincts at about 2 a.m.
