| What's so special about King County, Washington? |
|
At almost 1.9 million people, King County, Washington has more residents than 14 states (West Virginia, Nebraska, Idaho, Maine, New Hampshire, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, Vermont, or Wyoming.)
And this diverse county just voted to approve full civil rights for gays by a margin of more than 2 to 1. What’s so special about King County? And how do we repeat this success elsewhere?

| 1. Second largest county in the US, after LA county. |

I'd say we are pretty similar to other urban areas with dense populations. Salt Lake City is quite blue, though in a huge sea of red.

| 2. Density has a liberalizing effect? |
|
Might be the case. If so it would explain why the powers that be are so resistant to land planning that creates dense urban areas.

| 3. Probably contributes to a sense that what you do affects your neighbors |
|
--and vice versa. The types that think you prove you are an independent he-man by shitting in the reservoir go for lower density.
