SPOKANE, Wash. -- The suspect who waved a meat cleaver at supporters of Senator Patty Murray before a debate last month has been charged in federal court for threatening to murder the senator.
On Wednesday a complaint filed by FBI Senior Agent Frank Harrill of the Spokane Field Office charged that John Sieler “threatened to assault and murder a United States Official” with the intent “to impede, intimidate, and interfere” with Senator Murray’s performance of her duties.
On October 14 Sieler drove past the KSPS Studios on the South Hill several times before the televised debate between Sen. Murray and Republican challenger Dino Rossi. Each time he drove by he waved a meat cleaver and shouted obscenities at supporters for the senator, who were standing on the sidewalk outside the TV studio prior to the debate.
As he drove by he would make chopping motions with the knife. He drove by twice making threatening gestures at Murray supporters; the third time he drove by he was stopped by Spokane Police, who stopped him in front of Ferris High School near the TV studio.
Sieler was later taken into custody by the Spokane Police Department and booked into the Spokane County Jail for intimidation with a weapon.
