Ah, the so-called taxpayer bill of rights that the Republicans in Madison have been pushing has finally met its defeat, and the citizens of this state couldn't be luckier.

Anyone who's been to Colorado recently can tell you what "TABOR" means. It means teachers have to buy pencils for their students. It means legislators who don't want to do their jobs can shirk their responsibility to control taxes and spending and simply say, "There's nothing we can do to fix it; it's in the constitution!"

I have one question for Senate Majority Leader Mary Panzer (R-West Bend): How many taxpayer dollars did you waste in calling this special session?

It seems to me that if one really wants to control spending, one must first look to the state legislators who are throwing our money away.
