Twenty-three-year-old Jeremy Gonzalez, who joined the Milwaukee force less than a year ago, meaning he's still on probation, got himself arrested Saturday night for pushing state Sen. Tim Carpenter. Yup, the same Tim Carpenter who is running for Congress.
Aim high, young officer.
According to Sgt. Ken Henning and a Carpenter campaign spokesman, the trouble started at about 11:30 Saturday night in the 2900 block of S. 38th St., where both the senator and the officer live. It seems that the off-duty officer kicked over a Carpenter campaign sign that was planted on the politician's front lawn. Everyone agrees that the cop didn't have a clue that the guy whose name appeared on the sign was the same guy who lived in the house.
Still, kick over a pol's sign on his own property and it's a gimme that the candidate will appear.
"Carpenter confronted the off-duty officer (and said): 'Why are you destroying my sign?' " Henning said. "Words were exchanged. The verbal altercation turned into a physical altercation.
