Gwen could be huge for the presidential race, turning out a ton of voters in Milwaukee. Obviously the Democrat would have won anyway but they feel that she will energize the base more than anyone else.

She had tons of black support on the north side of Milwaukee, a part of town that is still seething a little from Marvin Pratt's loss in the mayor's election (hey, at least a Dem still won). I'm sure they're out in full force for Gwen.
Gwen is campaigning tough. I've gotten about three or four calls from her campaign, and I live just outside her district (share a common north side prefix, though). I just hope her supporters don't rest on their laurels, since it's a safe Dem seat. Gwen needs to get out there and push Kerry and Feingold as well. And I'm sure she will. She's got a great grassroots organization going.
As the TV ads say, you go Gwen!

| 6. Gwen Moore is exactly what we need... |

And to be honest if I had been running the Kerry campaign I would have been working hard to get more minority candidates running in urban areas across the country because when a huge population of the African Americans in Milwaukee are out and voting for Gwen they won't just be voting for Gwen, they'll be voting for Kerry.
Dems carry 90% of the African-American vote but the actual turnout for the minority is excessively low. If we had candidates across the board that excited them like Gwen does, we'd crush Bush just by voter increase alone.

And there are quite a few community groups here that are really motivated to vote Bush out. They are pissed!
They worked hard to try to elect Marvin Pratt as mayor. When that failed, and Tom Barrett (a former Dem Congressman who I admittedly voted for and actually like) was elected, that motivated them even more.
Gwen is running a very aggressive campaign, and really motivating people to vote. I just hope they turn out in November and vote, even though the House seat is pretty solid Dem.
I'm sure voting for Kerry and Feingold is motivation enough.

Some people want to make the mayoral contest a race thing, but Gwen's victory proves it's really about progessive politics. The crowd at her victory party Tuesday night was a rainbow of colors. And who was with Gwen at the podium? Not Marvin Pratt. Tom Barrett.
I hasten to add that I know from personal experience that Marvin Pratt is a good man. I just don't think his views represented the views of the voters as well as Tom's did.

Milwukee's city government was a mess, with scandals and prison terms abound.
Pratt is a decent guy, and he wasn't directly involved with any of this, but I felt it was time for new blood. Barrett's going to be a great mayor.

It bodes well for the general election.
This was the lone bright spot in a very disappointing primary for me. I can't wait to hear Gwen this weekend at Fighting Bob Fest.
