The federal Tories and Liberals continue their neck-and-neck race in the latest Nanos tracking poll completed April 9th, 2008.

Of note, NDP support is down five points nationally since February. Support in Ontario for the Liberals is up and support in Ontario for the NDP is down. Regardless of the Dion leadership perception problems, the past few weeks have seen the Grits win the Ontario by-elections, former Ontario NDP leader Bob Rae enter the House and the Lukiwski comments.

It’s important to remember, this poll was conducted at a time of media focus on the Lukiwski anti-gay comments made 17 years ago. It’s quite possible that some soft Ontario New Democrats have strategically parked with the Liberals to block the Tories.

Looks like the NDP's "slag the Grits" policy may be backfiring. Ditto for Harper's "slag Ontario" policy.

...Ontario hates Harper and flat out doesn't trust him. Add to that Flaherty's anti-Ontario campaign and I'd say there's little chance of a Harper majority government anytime soon. Now, who will replace Dion? The Liberals can't go to the polls with him at the helm...

It would be unprecedented to drop a leader without at least one election loss. It won't happen.

I would lay even odds that Dion would win a minority, as much as I would Harper.

Where you get your inside information from, but the Liberals can go to the polls anytime they and some other in parliament decide to do so.

So who would you think they should go to the polls with?

The Martin guy or the Chretiens guy?

If the NDP hadn't been fighting the Liberals in the last election, and since then, the Liberals would have a choice.

But they don't. And they are waiting to see how the new broom sweeps things clean. The guy is fighting a battle and we have to wait and see.

...you wouldn't even be using the phrase "the Liberals would have a choice", because Paul Martin (much as I dislike him for his hubris in assuming that he was entitled to be PM) would still be leader and Prime Minister.

As for me, it's a tough decision, but I'll probably vote NDP in my riding in the next election, not because I've ever belonged to the party, but because I like my sitting MP. And that's even with Gerard Kennedy running here against her (and I like him, too). I wish he'd try for a different seat.
