Hundreds protest Bush speech in Saskatoon

A noisy but peaceful crowd of 300 assembled in downtown Saskatoon on Wednesday to protest a speech by former U.S. president George W. Bush.

But protesters hoping to boo him in person were disappointed.

Bush, in town for a noon-hour speaking engagement at TCU Place, was taken inside the building earlier in the morning and avoided any encounters with the crowd.

He drew applause when he talked about how Canadian soldiers have carried a disproportionately large share of the burden in Afghanistan. When he finished, he received a standing ovation.

3. Why are we in trouble?

I mean, specifically, why? Anyone who would have made that comment about Canada fighting above it's weight in Afghanistan would have received a standing O. Don't you think? Plus, the people who fork over the big bucks to see Bush speak have got to be choir, right? So he's amongst friends.

As an aside, it sure would have been nice to hear him praise Canadian soldiers like that when he was president. And I don't mean when he tossed off a line or two about it when he visited Paul Martin in 2005, at the time four years into Canada's disproportionately heavy lifting in Afghanistan. This was a time remember when Bush was up here to kiss some ass to get Canada to maybe soften it's position against or buy into some newfangled Star Wars plan of his. Anyway, why couldn't he praise Canada's military effort when he was speaking from the presidential pulpit somewhere in America, at the White House, before Congress, wherever? Back after 9/11 I remember a Canadian TV reporter shouting a question at Bush aimed at getting him to publically comment on the hard work and sacrifice of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan. Previously Bush had been hinting that Canada wasn't doing enough or something. Anyway, I remember Bush reluctantly kind of went up to the reporter (Carl Hanlon from Global?) and almost through gritted teeth had to acknowledge the truth: Canada was doing a stalwart job.

on edit: It sure is funny, isn't it, that now that the Chimp is out of office he spends so much of his free time in Canada? And yet he never made an official visit to Canada as President until almost a year into his second term.

4. Not only Bush doesn't comment on Canada's large contribution in Afghanistan.

With our size population, we are certainly fighting above our weight.
As a news junkie who watches all news networks, (our Canadian stations plus CNN and MSNBC), I have noticed that the U.S.A networks simply do not talk about Canada's contribution. We, I believe, have the most casualties...deaths and injuries...next to the Americans. Why is it that they never mention this fact, I wonder? Everything that any other nation does is mentioned. I'd be surprised if many Americans even knew we are there in Afghanistan with the Americans, and have been from the beginning.
I hope this doesn't sound whiny, but believe me, if you got all your news from the U.S.A networks, you wouldn't even know we were in Afghanistan or were doing anything in space. I refer to our Canadian made and designed space arm etc.
Oh well, we can't blame the American people for not knowing when their media doesn't tell them.
