OTTAWA—Stephen Harper’s poll-primping turn at the piano last year appears to have triggered a stampede of performing MPs for one of Ottawa’s glittering social events of the year this weekend.
Conservative MPs have traditionally shied away from attending arts galas in big numbers after the prime minister’s campaign dismissal of the gatherings. But his successful warbling of the Beatles tune “With A Little Help From My Friends” signalled the show could go on.
So when the National Arts Centre’s Black and White ball went looking for Tory MPs to perform at its annual benefit opera gala this year, their search was brief and wildly successful.
One Conservative cabinet minister will walk the boards as a thespian, another will croon as part of a Conservative singing quintet, while a third ex-minister co-hosts the event.
