Tories blame Liberals ahead of UN seat vote
The federal Conservatives have begun suggesting quietly that Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff will be to blame if Canada does not win a seat on the United Nations Security Council.

The UN's 192 ambassadors will vote Tuesday to decide which two countries will win two-year seats on the 15-member Security Council.

Germany is considered a shoo-in for one of the seats; Canada and Portugal are vying for the other.

On Wednesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon suggested the Liberals were trying to scuttle Canada's chances of winning. Speaking to a group of foreign ambassadors in Ottawa, he accused Ignatieff in particular of being "unable to put the interests of this country above the interests of his political party."

LOL, it couldn't have anything to do with the harper cabal ignoring the UN when they weren't spitting on it, nah, couldn't be.

I hope we don't get the seat. With this current government in power and it's disdain for the U.N., we don't deserve it, imo.

1. Well
The Cons really blew it with Harper at the UN. A partisan speech followed up by Cannon's washing of politics, they may just loose it.

Portugal now appears to support Canada getting the seat.

All Harper will do is piggy back on Washington's ideas, the religious right and a certain area in the middle east.

If they get the seat they will certainly drive themselves out of power.

2. Ignattieff has eerie powers
According to these talking points, the whole world pays attention to the leader of the opposition instead of the PM. It that were really true, it doesn't say much for Harper.

3. I do thing Ignatieff has garnered more respect in the international world than...
harper and rightly so. harper and his cabal are seen, quite clearly, as bush cabal wannabes, imo, and that is the last thing the international community wants to experience again. Ignatieff is seen as having a world view while harper is seen as strictly 'provincial', imo.

4. Your point is valid
Ignatteff has earned a certain international credibility on the strength of his experience as a scholar and intellectual.

Still, power means a lot and Harper has power right now, so to blame Ignatieff for events is a stretch by the Harperites. As usual they are setting up to blame someone else for failure if things go wrong, but to claim the credit if things go right. It's a childish way of operating, and it grows tiresome to people. Especially to me.

5. I totally agree re the harper cabal is beyond childish in blaming...
Ignatieff for a loss, a loss that has not even occurred as yet. A loss that, if it does happen, is due entirely, imo, to the actions of the harper cabal since they took office. harper has little power when it comes to the UN and even less respect from the members and rightly so.

I hope you don't think I was, in any way, stating that the harper cabal's ridiculous and obvious ploy of foisting the blame onto Ignatieff was merited because that certainly was not my intent in the previous post.

6. No problem, I didn't think you were validating their argument
I just wanted to point out how transparently childish the Conservative framing has become on so many issues.

More and more, I get the feeling that they are worried about Ignattief turning out to be a good campaigner when the time comes. It could be quite interesting.
