OTTAWA - Justice Minister Irwin Cotler spent much of Wednesday defending the Liberal's new appointment process for nominations to the Supreme Court. Prime Minister Paul Martin on Tuesday nominated Ontario Court of Appeal Justices Rosalie Abella and Louise Charron to fill vacancies in the court.
Cotler faced questions from an ad hoc committee made up mostly of parliamentarians to look at the nominations.
The panel can ask Cotler about the prime minister's choices but can't approve or veto them.
