Two boys, aged 10 and 11, accused of brutally assaulting and torturing a pair of fellow schoolboys in South Yorkshire are brothers, it can be revealed

The children have been arrested by police after their young victims were said to have been burnt with cigarettes, cut with a knife and beaten with bricks.

The alarm was raised when the youngest victim, 9, was spotted wandering dazed and covered in blood and mud in New Edlington. He said that another victim, aged 11, had been pushed down a steep embankment by their attackers. The second child was found drifting in and out of consciousness near a pond in a disused brick yard.

He was airlifted to Sheffield Children’s Hospital where his condition was described as critical but stable. Last night he was showing signs of improvement and had been taken off a ventilator.

5. Amen! Children as young as ten and eleven have been tried as adults and been given

sentences of life in prison with no possibility of parole in this country.

Imagaine, children in the fourth and fifth grade sentenced to the next seventy to eighty years in prison.

I'm not saying that they should be given a slap on the wrist and nothing more done, but prison is probably NOT the answer.

Serious phycological testing, specialized and individual, long-term, specific-behavior-modification programs should be utilized.

Juvenile hall just doesn't cut it for kids this age. They may be too far gone to turn around, or they may have nuero-sociopathic problems that cannot be sufficiently modified, but the effort MUST be made. It is possible that the chidren who practic such horrible antisocial behavaior can turn into productive adults who can change the world for the better.

Agreed, many of our juvenile detention centers need work - here in Texas, we had a big scandal a year or two ago about sexual abuse going on in our juvenile prison system. I don't know how many inmates were victimized, but the affair rocked the Texas Youth Commision to its foundations.

probably longer depending on mental state.

They do it differently there, and they have truly managed to rehabilitate some kids who were responsible for crimes like this.

13. From what I've seen in the news, the boys had recently been taken into foster care.

So one can indeed presume a bad family background. Very tragic story all round. I just hope the victims recover fully. It sounds a bit more hopeful than it did.

11. I remember a similar incident in the early 90s in the UK

the two boys who kidnapped a young boy from his mother in a mall tortured him to death. It was horrible. The two boys are in their 20s now and have been given new identities!

12. Brothers charged with boys attack

Two brothers have been charged with attempted murder over an incident which left one child with serious head injuries and another with knife wounds.

The boys, aged 10 and 11, were arrested after another 11-year-old boy was found with head injuries in a ravine in Edlington, Doncaster, on Sunday.

His nine-year-old friend was found bleeding from knife wounds nearby and has undergone surgery.

The boys are also charged with robbery, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

They were remanded into secure local authority care after appearing at Doncaster Youth Court and will next appear in the same court on 14 April.
