| Polanski - Victim of Uncle Sam or filthy paedo? |
|
I am torn.
On the one hand, the crime was over 30 years ago, the victim is on record as saying she does not want to case pursued, there are all sorts of legal anomalies and there is something very odd about why Polanski was detained in Switzerland now, when he has been in and out of that country many times and even has a home there.
On the other hand, he did get a 13 year old girl drunk and f**k her up the arse.
Thoughts?

I admit that you're much more likely to get a sensible discussion of this here in the UK forum than in the main forums like General Discussion, but you have no idea how many alerts we've had to deal with about Polanski in the past few days. I now flinch when I see his name. I saw the UK forum as a Polanski-free oasis.

... is that we do have an oasis of sanity here. But it is still a valid question. I´m torn between "He´s a great director and holocaust survivor caught up in a complex legal process that cannot be summed up in black and white dealing with a crime that happened 30 years ago" and "He anally raped a 13 year old". The latter opinion is difficult to play down. Have you ever forced yourself on an unwilling sexual partner? Would you?
We´re grown up enough here to have a proper conversation. I hope.

Ever since he's been arrested GD has been full of little else but Polanski flamewars.

| 3. I find it hard to sympathise with Polanski |

I know he paid the victim off but this practice has long been used by the wealthy/connected to escape justice.
