BT to complete super-fast broadband network by 2012

BT's superfast broadband network will be completed in time for the 2012 Olympic Games, the firm has announced.

The £1.5bn fibre-optic network will offer speeds of up to 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) for some customers, supporting high-definition video.

At $52.95 in the Southern US you get a maximum of 16 MBPS. Virgin in the UK already offers 50 MBPS with BT about to move up to 100 MBPS opening to door to hi definition over the internet for 40% of the UK by 2012 and 100% by 2017.

The question I have is why is it in capitalist free society America that they are so far behind Social Democratic United Kingdom? I would argue that obviously capitalism isn't working very well for the United States in this regard.

corporations have no intention of making the necessary investment in new infrastructure. They'd rather milk consumers with the current system, which lags behind many other industrialized nations, until they absolutely have to upgrade, and said improvements will probably be heavily subsidized by the U.S. government. Socialism exists for the ultra rich and corporations. The rest of us get nothing.

I get about 30MB/sec in Dallas and I pay 30$ per month to ATT. Would be higher, but my house is old and they had to run copper from fiber optic.
