| UK's contribution to a Libyan NFZ? |
|
Quite impossible. At present, there are only 2 squadrons of Typhoon air defence fighters. All are needed for QRA (air defence) of UK airspace, especially since they werent that successful in intercepting Russian bombers previously. To contirbute to Libyan NFZ would reduce the number of QRA platforms.
Suppose the Tornados--which are being retired--will be used. But those aren't fighter planes--they faired poorly against Saddam's air defences; I'm sure Libya has around the same type of SAMs. And Tornados only carry Sidewinders.
Basing: All have to be based in Italy--Cyprus is too far away.
Conclusion:If it happens, the UK's QRA defences will be affected, the mission will be costly--straining the military even more.
