Aussie troops train in torture techniques that break Geneva conventions

SOME of Australia's most elite troops and intelligence officers undergo training sessions that breach the Geneva Conventions, The Sunday Telegraph has learned.

The troops are subjected to sexual humiliation, threats of physical violence and sleep deprivation during the interrogation training at the Defence Intelligence Training Centre at Canungra, Queensland.

"Techniques that would not be permitted by the 1949 Geneva Conventions include personal verbal attack to lower morale and weaken the will to resist, and the employment of ploys and tricks such as impersonation, fake documents, and threat (only) of dire punishment," he said.

I don't think that trend is something new to Australia. During WWII, the Australian military was showing the US a thing or two on how to do away with the need to build and maintain POW camps by making sure the enemy troops weren't given the opportunity to surrender....

Off on a slightly different tangent, but Kyoto comes into affect tomorrow and we're not on board, just like the US. The Howard govt is an embarressment as far as I'm concerned...

4. Aussie troops

have never had a reputation for taking prisoners. Breaker Morant was set up but that doesn't mean Aussies haven't shot lots of prisoners.

I'm sure the Aboriginal people have a few ideas as to where such a mentality came from.
