Full Text of Harper's Magazine Article, "None Dare Call It Stolen"

After reading the exerpt of "None Dare Call It Stolen" in the August edition of Harper's magazine last night, I called Books-A-Million and WaldenBooks here in my hometown today and found that neither had access to copies of Harper's Magazine. I then called the local library. They carry Harper's but did not have the August issue. However, a librarian at the reference desk checked at Galileo, a web-based public informational database service of the University System of Georgia and found the full text of the article in .pdf format.

To do this, just go to g"alileo.peachnet.edu". On the right side where it says "Log in with GALILEO password," type in the current password "Biogenic" and click "GO!" or press "Enter" on your computer keyboard. Then, where it says, "Need Information Fast?" click on "MasterFILE Premier". Type the name of the article, "None Dare Call It Stolen", into the "Find" field and click the "Search" button. After the entry for the article comes up, click on PDF Full Text. The .pdf file that will be downloaded to your computer is 3.7 MB in size, so the process may be lengthy if you do not have a high-speed connection.

You can print the article, but I have not found a direct way to save it. Maybe there is something wrong with my laptop. Because of other things I have up on my screen, I have not rebooted it. However, I was able to print the article to an Acrobat Distiller file. This creates a .pdf file on your computer, but you must have Adobe Acrobat to do this.

Hope this works for everyone who wants to read the whole article.

2. Harper's will have the full article posted on their web-site in 1-2 weeks.

I got an email from their editors yesterday saying that they post their articles on the web as soon as they take an issue off the newsstands. Should be another week or so for the MCM article.

Yes, I read that somewhere, too. Since the full article is publicly available on Galileo now, I just thought some members might not want to wait. For those who would like to read it sooner, rather than later, they may want to go ahead and get it, because the Galileo password is changed periodically.

By the way, if anyone is interested in reading the extract (conrary to my previous post, we all know that it is an "excerpt," not an "exerpt") and doesn't have the link, it can be found at Excerpt. I also like the cover photo for the August issue of Harper's, which shows three chimps (or bonobos) (Hear No Evil, See No Evil and Speak No Evil) with hands over ears, eyes and mouths, respectively. They obviously represent the three major branches of the MSM, i.e., print, television and radio.

I have it on the screen now and would like to save and/or print it, but am at a loss. I have the paid version of Acrobat (Student version) but I haven't the slightest idea of how to proceed. (What? --- RTFM?? :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:).

On edit: I just emailed it to myself, and now have my own copy as well as a saved file. (It did ask if I had Adobe Acrobat)

5. Acrobat

I was able to print it normally on my printer from the Galileo window. I could not save it the first time I tried. It kept telling me I did not have enough room in my temporary files folder. That was why I printed it to an Acrobat Distiller file. However, I just tried to save it again normally and had no problem. The initial problem was apparently with my wireless router. I recycled the power on it and repaired the connection when I was trying to print the file, and that fixed the problem I was having.

6. I couldn't find any "print" button on the Galileo page.

I tried CTL-P (something I'd never done with an Adobe document before). It spat out a page with only a simple header, so I cancelled the operation. But as an email, I can do with it however I wish.

7. Print button

If you are on the page that has the "None Dare Call It Stolen" report, it is the third button from the left just above the window that contains the article (it has a printer on the button).

8. There is NO "Print" button on the Galileo page that displays the article.

But there's one on the one that I emailed to myself (it came as an attachment).

13. Harper's "a very good magazine"

Hey, I agree that it is a good publication. However, I tried to buy the magazine and could not find it locally. Besides, I have a limited budget, and there are a lot of good publications. I do not usually subscribe to a periodical because of a single article. If that were the case, I would probably have to subscribe to a zillion magazines, newspapers and web pages. It is available on Galileo, and I can see no reason why I should not download a copy from there if I can not buy it locally or find it in my local library. Besides, this is an article of national importance, and it needs to be available to anyone who cares to read it, irrespective of whether they subscribe to the magazine.
