The state Democratic Party would also have to agree to the shift, said Rep. Peppi Bruneau, R-New Orleans. Bruneau serves on the House committee that reviews election laws.
"We aren't going to have two (presidential preferential primary) elections," he said.
The election isn't designed to select a president, but rather show which candidates are leading among state voters prior to presidential nominating conventions.
In other action, the committee also voted to opposed a bill that would allow displaced voters who have registered by mail, but never voted in person, to cast ballots by mail.
Bruneau called the bill "an invitation to fraud." The bill, by Rep. Jalila Jefferson-Bullock, D-New Orleans, was approved in committee and could come up for a vote on the House floor Sunday night.<
