Texas-based (Diebold) Premier Elections Solutions, which provides electronic voting machines to Butler and 55 Ohio counties, issued the report after officials found two errors during ballot-counting nearly three months ago.

The report does not provide a definitive answer to exactly why the issues occurred, but narrows down two possible problems: Software used for counting votes conflicted with virus software, and local elections officials did not understand error messages that happened as a result.

Riggall said there would be no chance of the errors being fixed by the general election in November, mostly because the new software would need to be approved by federal and state governments, which could take several months.

Someone told me that, in German, Diebold means "thief".

Aside from the fact that this problem wasn't discovered and fixed long ago, I cannot believe that this company cannot find, fix, and pass certification tests with five and a half months to go before the election.

I have heard of conflicts between programs such as an application and antivirus software. One solution is to replace the antivirus software.

What really amazes me is that people still do their banking with Diebold equipment which cannot get a simple vote counting program done accurately.

You should read Andi Novick's review of the soiled and sordid history of the major voting companies. It is available at www.votersunite.org . It is well worth the read, and is quite frightening for its evidence that no government oversight has occurred in allowing these companies to count our votes.

It seemed to be indicative of the mindset that life is short, so people should create as much havoc as possible in the time we have.

Then I learned that Diebold was the name of the guy that founded the company. Oops. :D

Imagine we programs to link space vehicles together, track you money by the second, track programming that we watch,levy bank charges on the drop of a hat, monitor phone comversations....but we can't find a program that can track a yes or no answer. This is just a mind boggling issue. As technology advances we need to train the poll workers, with more that $50.00 and a egg salad sandwich.
Anything can be done with time and money. Money that Diebold or what ever their name is now won't spend because they want it to be broken and we know many corporations hate transparency...everyone is aware of Republican Corporate games to hide the pickle. Grow up and pay attention America.

EVEREST Report, which was recently commissioned by Ohio's Secretary of State.

These machines ship with updated anti-virus software and after that your out of luck until the next software upgrade/approval you can install.
