Summer Jam at Watkins Glen - 35 years ago - 7/28/73

It has been 35 years since Summer Jam '73, otherwise known as the Watkins Glen Concert. The Allman Brothers Band, The Band, and The Grateful Dead played to a crowd estimated at five to six hundred thousand. My uncollected ticket cost $10. Thought some of you might enjoy this link to some great old photos of the event (and to other links). I'm betting there were some DUers who were there too, and I hope they might want to share some memories.

1. My first Dead concert, what I can remember of it.

White hot day. Had to park the car miles from the concert site. Got separated from the person in our group who had the cold beer. Finally got to the top of the mountain road -- a half-naked sea of humanity -- spotted a large bottle of Chianti sitting on a red and white checked table clothe on the ground by the stage. Someone offered me some of that wine. I drank a lot of it - the others laughed and gave me knowing looks -- the rest was like a dream.

4. Wasn't at Watkins Glen but unknowingly drinking too much of "that"wine

yeah,I did that once on a summer night in a beer garden in Austin around that time.Really pretty colors.

2. Too young to be there, but wish I had been...

...and I say this without ever having heard a lick of the music (are there bootlegs of it?) First of all, three of my favorite bands. Second of all, hell, just to be in a crowd that large must have been a trip. I can only imagine that, in the four years since Woodstock and Altamont, the vibe must have been very different in '73. I'd love to hear your memories of the event, and those of others who were there. Great thread!

3. I was there and I still have my ticket

But how I would love that poster to frame it with. Don't remember much of the show but I do remember the mud. We must have left quite early to get there because we drove right in and set up camp easily. I do love that website link and some of those pictures are just about where we were sitting or where we squeezed into as I remember. People were much more forgiving back then to movers to the front.
