We are getting married in my church. He considers himself agnostic - he felt that the religion thing would be a big deal for us and said we needed to discuss it on our first date - as soon as I said " I don't take the bible literally" I saw him sigh a big sigh of relief!

| 8. I wish the Episcipanlian church was the majority Christian Church in the US. |
|
The Episcopalian Church is significantly cooler than the Roman Catholic Church, the Mormon Church, and the mass majority of Protestant churches.
The Episcopalian Church is one of those rare, radical, liberal Christian churches in the US that some would have us believe is actually a representation of many Christian churches here in the US.

That if more people could be exposed to the episcopal church - they would like it!

There are a lot of liberal Christians on DU who belong to conservative Churches.

| 9. I'm an atheist, but I was raised an Episcopalian, and my mother still attends church... |
|
...sings in the choir, casseroles on Sunday afternoons.
She's a "women's libber" from way back is is DAMN PROUD of her church for ordaining women and gay and lesbian priests/reverends/ministers whatever they call 'em.
LOTS of atheists are former Episcopalians, because there is very little pressure from that church to actually believe in the supernatural.
All of the bible is allegory to my mother. (Except the resurrection... and the existence of heaven ...she believes THOSE parts).
Reading Bishop Spong helped me to decide that I was a natural Freethinker. And I "left" the church the day after my confirmation... My minister didn't want me asking question in confirmation classes... pulled me aside and told me that my questions were VALID and UNANSWERABLE, and that "perhaps I could just get through the confirmation ceremony, for my Mother..." very non-pressure guy, and I loved him for it.
My Dad was an atheist, but he never chided my mother on her beliefs. She absolutely believes that she will be with him again when she dies.

has been working against bigotry.
They worship two different gods.

I went to a friend's wedding at an Episcopal church and every once in a while, the pastor started speaking gibberish. After a while I realized that it was supposed to be Hebrew, but was so badly mispronounced as to be almost unintelligible.
Do other Episcopalian pastors do this? This was my only experience of that your denomination, so I'm curious.

| 28. I've never experienced that - but my priest says he has spoken in tongues |
|
He has not done this in our church - I have to say I would be somewhat freaked - I imagine. I am more of a traditional Episcopalian - I love the incense! My mom is a cradle Episcopalian - my dad was raised Presbyterian - I was baptized Presbyterian and confirmed Episcopalian. I left the presbyterian church for several reasons - but the big reason was that my church i was attending was moving in a more contemporary direction - and I wanted a traditional service.
Plus that whole Presbyterian stance on not allowing gays or lesbians to be open really honked me off!
I could go on and on about my "conversion"....
Btw - my priest is openly gay and just celebrated his one year anniversary of his blessing with his partner.

Even though I'm an atheist. It was probably the only denomination outside of the UU community that would accept someone like me. I have no problems with Episcopalians/Anglicans - they do it right, and they treated me well.
