| If the Religious Right is fighting "the good fight" in the War on |
|
Christmas (tm), then why isn't anybody talking about how Anti-Semitic the Right Wingers are in doing so?
I mean, if the Left makes one comment about a Palestinian fighting back when being attacked by a bunch of armed Israelies, we're immediately painted as Anti-Jew (and the right conveniently forgets how they were against Joe Lieberman in 1999-2000), but forcing "Merry Christmas" down everybody's throats is just being "a good Christian" (tm)???

| 1. It isn't just anti-Semitic |
|
it is anti any and all other faiths. The point of the tirade, other than to put up yet another straw man to control the minds of the fundies, is to show a genuine fear of diversity. We are fast becoming one world via communications and especially the internet, and these people are scared to death to realize that, although Christianity is one of the world's largest religious sects, there are more non-Christians than Christians. And they have this quaint notion that non-Christians want to 'convert' them. Funny, because many other faiths, mine included, actually frowns upon proselytizing.

| 2. Yes, but the recent flak has been that "we" (the left, or more correctly, |
|
the left of Rush) are the ones who cannot tolerate the Jews . . . all the while forgetting that the Neo-Nazi movement is right of Pat Buchanan . . .

in the RW "Christian" base. They want to see themselves as persecuted, and their manipulators are happy to oblige. Seriously, think about the thing for a minute: If these stores displaying "Happy Holiday" signs thought they would increase their sales by switching to "Merry Christmas," don't you think they'd do it? After all, they're in business to make money, not to spread Christianity. As for me, I love the whole season: "Welcome Yule!" "Lo Saturnalia!" "Happy St. Stephen's Day!" "Happy New Year!" "Joyous Epiphany!"

| 4. IMO, it's an attempt to get the errant progressive liberal Jews back in |
|
"the program" of supporting the neocon agenda wholesale. The fundies, who are a base of the necon agenda, have gone on record supporting Israel against terrorists, Palestinians (in their eyes, what's the difference?) and made it seem there are no differences in the religious, social agendas of both groups: fight against homosexuality, a strong Israel, religious objects displayed on public spaces, etc.
This is posturing as a warning if any "independent" Jews want to challenge them, like a Joan Crawford "Don't fuck with me, fellas!"

| 5. There was an interesting thread with links last week |
|
about how most Neocons are Jewish. I was surprised, but the links were solid.
But you know, I knew when I was in third grade (a LONG time ago) that you sent "Seasons Greetings" cards to anyone who you weren't absolutely sure was Christian. I don't see the big deal. I honestly don't.

| 6. That's a mighty big "if." |

My take on it is that anyone who would comment on the Anti-Semitism of it has already rolled his or her eyes and moved on.
