Open on Sunday? 84% of major Utah stores do business on the Sabbath

Fifty years ago, almost every major shop and store in Utah was closed on Sundays, according to an old, yellowing study by the Utah Council of Retailers.

Times have changed radically. But they have changed less in Utah County than in other parts of the state.
About half of the major stores in Utah County now open on Sundays, a significant increase from 50 years ago. But elsewhere in the state, nine of every 10 stores now open on Sundays — a monumental increase.
Those findings emerge from Deseret Morning News research of 2,476 retail stores statewide, including nearly all grocery and convenience stores in the state plus larger retailers, chain stores and businesses in the state's major shopping malls.

1. Hypocracy of my mormon aquaintences

They won't go to a store, but they have no problem flying, watching TV, using electricity, etc etc. What's the difference? Oh yeah, it's hard to give up those conveniences, but you can just not go shopping and claim that you are a good person.

2. It's funny how the churches often don't realize they change with Culture

When I was a young teen, I went to a Southern Babptist (no longer) church in Florida. At that time, (mid-70's), they required teen girls wearing two piece bathing suits to wear a t-shirt over the top. (Go figure) Over the years, that policy slowly withered away (as society became less fussy about showing skin) and they have little problem with the current bathing suit sytles. Of course, they think they are just as "conservative" as ever.

3. When I was a kid MOST stores were closed on Sundays..

They were called the "Blue Laws" and it was kind of nice to have a day where there was nothing you COULD do but hang out with friends and family (whether or not you went to Church).

7. "Blue laws" were common nationwide

not only Utah. For example liquor stores in many states are still closed on Sundays to this day. As a child I lived in Salt Lake City and Fairfax County, Va. and there was no difference.

My family is Mormon and yes we watched Ed Sullivan, Bonanza and Candid Camera on Sundays. I never heard it told not to watch TV on Sundays. Where did you hear that progressivebadger?

IN lexington county, don't allow non-grocery items to be sold before 1:30 on sunday.

9. Car dealerships and liquor stores

are closed all day long Sundays in Minnesota.
