Michigan self-imposes sanctions

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- The University of Michigan admitted Tuesday to a series of violations in its storied football program and insisted the problems related to practice time and the activities of graduate assistants were not enough to warrant major punishment from the NCAA.

"I would characterize today as a day of relief," athletic director David Brandon said.

Michigan released more than 150 pages detailing its investigation and self-imposed sanctions it hopes will satisfy the NCAA, whose staff will hold a hearing on the case in August. A final decision on NCAA penalties could take months, but coach Rich Rodriguez is not worried about that distracting his players.

"I don't think this ongoing case will affect them at all," Rodriguez said. "I think our players are very excited about the season and our staff is excited."

The sanctions included a recommendation for two years of probation for the NCAA's winningest football program, which is 8-16 in two seasons under Rodriguez. The school also said seven people, including the coach, had been reprimanded and another was fired.

"We believe that probation is typically one of the outcomes of major violations," Brandon said. "Probation puts your program under a microscope."

29. USC self sanctioned their Men's Basketball program

Because of the Mayo thing. Banned post season play too. That was apart of the joint investigation with the Bush thing. I've been out of the loop lately but the investigation into their football program just finalized or is about to finalize. We'll see where this goes but I just wanted to point out they gave themselves somewhat severe sanctions in regards to their men's basketball program because of dealings with Mayo.

I couldn't believe that he chickened out like that and yet the people around here still revere him. Of course, they've had to put up with nothing but crap ever since, though the new guy seems like a step in the right direction, if he doesn't end up being involved in the Reggie Bush stuff.

3. I'm reading the investigation

I'd forgotten the enormity of some of the charges. A practice went 20 minutes over the limit! They didn't count warming up and stretching as practice time!

In fact, one of the bylaws they violated has been changed and one of the infractions wouldn't even be an infraction now (non-coaching personnel's time at coaching meetings).

It's a lot of small stuff that adds up to a pattern. Not good, but not really a major violation.

And no self-imposed sanctions or NCAA sanctions. Funny how Troy Smith can take money from a booster and no sanctions for OSU. Funny how Jim Tressel can teach a football class in the fall, open only members of the football team and it's not extra practice.

Kudos to Michigan for admitting their lapses. And kudos as well for calling out the Free Press on their witch hunt. They blew it all out of proportion.

Why doesn't it comprise extra coaching?

Funny description of it in the course catalogue; it's offered to "Varisty" football players. It implies that you try out for the class!

If Lynn Henning said that Michigan State is running a cleaner program, I think we really need to look at the relibability of Lynn Henning. Michigan State could barely field a bowl team, it had kicked off so many members for felonies. They reinstated a player at the beginning of the season who'd almost killed a hockey player (he cracked his skull) over the summer. That player, along with a host of others, got involved in another nonsensical brawl and a whole slew of them are gone.

If Lynn Henning thinks that is the gold standard of athletic programs in Michigan, I don't think we can really take anything he says seriously. Exceeding a practice by 20 minutes, not counting stretching as practice versus a football team that acts as a posse and goes out wearing black masks, provoking fights?

There is a natural bias from a web site that is sanctioned by the University of Michigan. It's almost as bad as when some folks here will quote a blogger as their evidence.

my point wasn't exactly the source (which I didn't put up anyway), but that these charges really don't comprise the most serious infraction ever perpetrated in college sports.

And if they're that bad, the rest of the NCAA better watch out that their practices don't last longer than 20 minutes over schedule!

28. Actually, the coach of the school I went to (not Ohio State) got his ass canned

for the same thing that R-Rod is accused of. An extra 15 minutes of weight lifting and starting one day early was all it took.

24. Here are the five allegations made by the NCAA

• Quality control staff members “regularly monitored” voluntary winter and summer workouts and “regularly assisted” with on- and off-field coaching duties from 2008-09.

• Football players were required to participate in more than the maximum allowed practice hours by anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours a week.

• Graduate assistant coach Alex Herron provided “false and misleading information” to NCAA enforcement staff on whether he monitored summer workouts he was not allowed to attend.

• Head coach Rich Rodriguez “failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the football program and failed to adequately monitor the duties and activities” of his quality control staff.

• The athletic department “failed to adequately monitor its football program to assure” NCAA compliance.


It will be interesting to see how the NCAA responds to Michigan's response.
