Some people don't know what it really means to be a "fan"

Or the meaning of home town pride. Or loyalty. Or family.

Sports are a silly diversion, entertainment, that unites people across gender, generation, religious and social boundaries. Fidelity to the home team is something that binds us when other things pull as apart. It can be a source of civic pride and is one of the things that gives people a sense of place.

The corporatization of sports and celebrity has longed stained the purity and innocence of the common bonds uniting sports fans, but yet it endures. It is ingrained in us as little children and often lasts a lifetime.

It is all too easy to become negative and skeptical. Little by little, though, it kills whatever may be left of that child that still lives within each of us.

2. Sports is one of the few shared experiences we have in this country anymore

We're such a divided country - what I love about sports is that, say, on Super Bowl Sunday, so many people are doing the same thing. Oh, and coming here to argue with you guys.
