Sharks Trade Heatley To Wild

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- San Jose and Minnesota made their second major deal of the offseason with the Sharks sending forward Dany Heatley to the Wild on Sunday for forward Martin Havlat.

This moves came on the heels of the draft-day trade that sent All-Star defenseman Brent Burns to San Jose for speedy forward Devin Setoguchi and two other players.

The acquisition of Burns filled San Jose's need for a topflight defenseman but created a new need for speed up front after losing Setoguchi.

"He's got world-class speed," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "When we realize we gave up some speed in the Brent Burns deal, the need to get that in our top six was important. ... When you're looking at high-end speed, breakaway players that like to play in big moments, Marty is at the top of the list."

1. This deal has the potential to help both teams..

I like Heatley, but he just never lived up to expectations in San Jose. With Havlat, they get speed, a proven scorer..something that should only be enhanced with the kind of supporting cast he'll get playing with the Sharks, and the cap hit is $2.5 million less..

I like this deal as I do the Burns/Seto trade. I also like the fact that Sharks GM Wilson isn't content with just making the WCF..

2. I think San Jose could have done a lot better to improve their fortunes

had they dealt Heatly for a first rounder. The 2012 draft is supposed to be stacked in the first two rounds from top to bottom. San Jose probably has a better shot of adding a 30+ goal scorer to their roster rather than what they got in Havlat.

Minnesota probably could have gotten back a decent prospect as well as a second/third round pick in return.

With this deal, the best both of these teams can hope for is to break even.

System wise both Minnesota and San Jose rank in the bottom five in the league. Not a lot of upward preassure on both those clubs. San Jose is going to keep cycling players off their roster while Minnesota keeps throwing mud at the wall.

3. What. The. F%%$%$k??!!

We just traded away two of our best players for two nobodies who haven't even had a sniff of the playoffs?! Plus, Setoguchi is Japanese-Canadian, so we blew it much like we did when trading Manny Malhotra, the league's only Indian player, to the Canuckleheads. :dunce:

4. First off....Malhotra wasn't traded

he was signed by Vancouver as a FA. Secondly, Seto and Heatley weren't "two of our best players"... least not last year anyway. Dany only had 26 goals and 64 points, a career low in points and tying a career low in goals when playing more than half a season... And Seto only accounted for 41 points, while the D-man he was traded for, Burns, actually had 46..

I liked both of them, but you have to give something up to get something...Burns fills a need that was exposed by the Canucks in the WCF. While Heatley's contract had become an albatross, particularly with the corresponding drop in production..

Btw, neither Brent Burns or Martin Havlat are nobodies. To quote Wings coach Mike Babcock when he heard the Sharks had acquired Burns.. “They just hit a home run. That’s a gold medal pick. I’m pissed off.”
