Isn't that the way the pros play? College basketball? Major League baseball? You win your division and get into the playoff tournament. And sometimes there are upsets. But ALL of the best teams get a shot at the title through the tournament.
The BCS system screws schools because it tries to cling to the voting system in lieu of a real playoff. It's not a fair system because it involves the politics of voting and having to overcome preseason polls. You can go 11-0 and you get in, regardless of the strength of your conference and schedule, because you got voted in the top five to start. OR, you go 11-0 and DON'T get in, despite the strength of your conference and schedule, because you got voted #13 at the start. Since the BCS formula includes the subjective data of voting, it cannot be a fair system.
With a real playoff system, USC and Texas STILL go to the playoffs because they are conference winners. They both are great football teams. I think it would be fairer and more interesting to see them play a couple of more good college teams on the way to the National Championship - like last year, an undefeated Auburn would have had a chance to get to the title game. The year before, Oklahoma would not have faced LSU in the Sugar in the BCS "National Championship" game because they LOST their conference championship. Perhaps we would could have seen the LSU-USC match that should have been.
