Tom Brady is SI's Sportsman of the Year. Comments?

I think it's a pretty good choice, and I say that as a Michigan State University fan. However, if Joe Paterno never won it, he should have this year. Otherwise, I would think Matt Millen would merit strong consideration.

Brady is a good QB but hardly exceptional - at least in my book. Annika deserved it more than Brady (along with about 16 other athletes).

Yes, the argument can be made that Annika deserved it more than Brady. However, Annika may be named Sportwoman of the Year. SI gives out two awards regarding the top athlete. The best male athlete is named Sportman of the year and the best female athlete is named Sportwoman of the year. I think Annika will win for Sportwoman of the year in that this year she really does not have anyone to rival her except maybe Michelle Wie. I would not be surprised if Wie does upset Annika, but Annika deserves the award. At this point, I am rooting for Annika.

Yes, it was downright embarassing and very sad to watch. The few non-rookies we have on the entire team were devastated. But, to be expected given out colossal number of injuries, etc. This season is over, so only have to look forward to next year and watch the rest of the teams fight in the playoffs :)

8. I pick Pete Carroll

Yeah I'm biased but that has been a phenomenal transformation. The USC program had been down for so long that at least 5 or 6 coaches turned us down before Carroll took the job. He was so lowly regarded that when I wrote a positive letter to the editor of Trojan Family alumni magazine praising the hiring the editor decided not to print it because he had received so many other negative letters he assumed mine was sarcastic.

Now the university has an incredible bounce, not just in the football winning streak but the attendance figures and overall enthusiasm. I'm hearing from old friends for the first time since the late '80s. Alumni donations have gone through the roof, they're finally building an on-campus basketball arena after contemplating it for 35 years, and attendance at university events is at unprecedented levels. Take Pete Carroll out of the equation and likely none of it ever happens.

Had an overall winning record and as someone who studies statistics extensively, his teams were always statistically sound in the most vital areas. That's why I was thrilled he took the USC job. Coaches with much worse results have lasted far longer in the NFL.

Here, I'll just paste his NFL info from Carroll's bio on the USC website:

"He was the head coach of the NFL's New England Patriots for 3 seasons (1997-99) and New York Jets for 1 year (1994). He guided the Patriots into the playoffs in his first 2 seasons, winning the AFC Eastern Division title at 10-6 in 1997 and advancing to the second round of the playoffs, then posting a 9-7 regular season mark in 1998. His overall record in New England was 27-21 in the regular season (including 8-8 in 1999) and 1-2 in the playoffs. He owns the franchise's second-best winning percentage (54.9%).

After serving as the Jets' defensive coordinator for 4 seasons (1990-93), he became the team's head coach the following season. His 1994 Jets went 6-10. Only 3 other Jets head coaches won more games in their rookie campaign."

He was a kid taken out of Michigan in the SIXTH ROUND of the draft. He was supposed to be a third-stringer, backup at best. Then Bledsoe got hurt (I guess that I should consider the Mo Lewis hit that started it all a blessing) and Brady stepped in, took a team that was a perennial cellar-dweller, and turned them into Super Bowl Champs--three times.

He was a Joe Montana story, and the media loved Joe Montana.

14. Tiger Woods

My first choice was and still is Tiger Woods. About a year ago some people were wondering if Tiger's ability to win was over. Then this year he wins the Master's in grand fashion and then goes on to win the British Open.

I see the value of naming people like Peyton Manning or Pete Carroll. Manning is helping to lead the Colts to an unbeaten season. Pete Carroll has once again lead USC to a bowl appearance. Also he lead the team to the bowl appearance undefeated.

I truly believe that Tom Brady should not have been named Sportman of the Year. He has not done anything great this year. He can barely lead his team to victory this season. So I do not think he sould have been Sportman of the Year.

Brady has not done anything this season. The patriots are having a hard time winning this year. One could argue that since the team cannot win this season maybe Brady was not the key reason they won Superbowls the previous three years.
