| Gypsies , Tramps and Thieves installment 7 "Piano Bar" |
|
Piano Bar ‘Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, I gotta love one man til I die”… The grand piano tinkled into the night as the house members sang their favorite song over a few vin rouge, and laughed happily. Suddenly from three floors below on the street, the sound of sirens and flashing light alerted everyone to the danger of the ever marauding, indiscrimate, and deadly land sharks presence in the area. Lights deadened, piano stopped, voices hushed and eyes peered out of the third story window to the street below: where the sight of _six_ patrol cars emptying into the building across the street in one of their agonizing drug raids; swept the building from bottom to top. We watched as apartment lights lit up floor by floor from bottom to top. Apparently they intended to search every apartment and person in the building. Whew at least it wasn’t us this time. Preston, the instigator led us up our secret ladder to the roof of our building for some fresh air, and a clearer view of the activities across the street. He suddenly realized all of the officers and activities were taking place within the opposite structure, leaving the patrol cars empty and unguarded. Then, the ever-quick Preston espied a pile of cement cinder blocks on our roof. He jumped to his feet, grabbed two of the twenty lb chunks and let them go flying off our roof and through the window of one and the top of another of the hated land sharks. We were astonished and terrified as we all fled back down to our darkened apartment where we crept to peer over the window for the ensuing fury. As the cocky, laughing police dragged a few emaciated hippie speed freaks out of the building, they themselves freaked out when they saw the damage inflicted on their equipment. Fools that they were, they naturally assumed the damage had been flung at them from the bitter people they had just hassled. We gleefully watched as they exploded in fury, and this time they searched the building from bottom to top inside, and on the fire escapes only to find nothing. We laughed; we laughed ourselves to sleep that night.
