The best teachers are the ones who engage their students.
How anyone can be engaged when being drilled for a test (as opposed to taught) is beyond me.
I was recently given my elementary school report cards and the difference in insight of the various teachers on those cards is stunning. It is very obvious now why I excelled in certain subjects and not in others.

Where the teacher was paying attention to me (with praise and encouragement), I paid attention to them - very simple.
