And I want to thank Gavin Newsome for at least finding some way to mitigate and be a cooler head about things. But the idea of hiding behind 'civility'.... I've seen it before.

Back when I was rabble-rousing in my small-down southern home-town, back in college, that was always the complaint against me. That I was 'rude'. That I was disrespectful.

But you see how that works? It BEGINS with the assumption that the oppressor has some inherent right to be respected, and that the oppressee doesn't.

Rachel called him out on it. The oppressor can afford to be 'polite' because he has all the power. It's easy to politely wield the power of law and majority. Politeness is not a luxury the oppressed usually have.

When the oppressed only have civil disobedience and rhetoric as weapons, calling for 'civility' is identical to calling for acquiescence.

Isn't that obvious?

Is there some reason that everyone doesn't understand that?

The people that need to understand it are the people in the middle of this debate.

The enemy will never understand it. But moderates on the issue have to figure out that oppression creates an environment where being 'uncivil' is practically the only available strategy for fighting back.

To demand that we become civil is to demand that we essentially wait until straights (and bi's who pass as straight) get around to tossing us some crumbs. It's precisely like that. It's like making my dog sit until I give him the treat, so that he won't jump up on my legs to try to get it.

Someone over at Shakesville brought up the very important point that the two "sides" here are NOT equal and equivalent and people need to stop behaving as if they are. One "side" is demanding basic fairness and the right to be more than second class citizens in our own country, and the other "side" is advocating hate and discrimination and what really amounts to genocide. One "side" has all the power and is holding all the cards and the other "side" has been historically shut out and has to resort to begging for table scraps.

It's like how when news outlets do a story about Wiccans they always have some crazy ass fundie's opinion on how the religion is evil for "balance". Yet they would never get Richard Dawkins' opinion for an article about Christians. Fancy that.

It's the very definition of privilege.
