| Poll question: Lets be honest....who here has done the on-line dating thing? |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 02:46 PM by MadAsHellNewYorker
So I'm sure we have all done it at least once--met someone off the Internet.
But the question is really...what happened?

Met many people that never add to their profiles.
Never met anyone that lead to a relationship.
Very negative on this form of meeting people.

We met at an online gay message board, The Advocate Idea Exchange. About 5 years ago.
It turned out ok. :-)

. . . he and Doug met online only as a result of Terry's unrequited love for Scott, the local Log Cabin Republican! ;)

| 5. I have to say "All of the above" so what is that "Other"? |
|
...on-line dating I have found to be rather disappointing. However, finding on-line correspondence friends of both genders has been rewarding, just like finding friends in live situations. You win some, you loose some, you learn lessons, and you have disappointments, not much different than real life. My only restriction has been that I am limited to how much and far I can travel, but I have found a rewarding support group of about a dozen or so cyber friends all around the world really and we communicate, drop in on one another, send emails, discuss the world, life, family, share joys, fears, sadness and just enjoy one another's company on-line. I have found two major obstacles to these relationships:
- Politics; - Religion; - Sex.
And that goes both ways, because these seem to be hot buttons for many people including myself and because I can only speak of my own reactions I find I get very self centered when it comes to talking about sex, I get dogmatic when it comes to talking about politics that are to the right of my views (which I think are pretty moderate) and I get very intolerant when talking about religion (again when I perceive to position of the other person as fundamentalist and unreasonably intolerant of my view).
So, when I get myself out of the way and just listen (read in the case of cyber) and not allow myself to become too serious about things, then the relationship seems to run more smoothly. Allowing myself to be open minded and honest helps also. That's it!

I started on the internets waaaaay before online dating services sprung up, I've never ever used them because I have to be friends with someone before I can date them, it's just how I am. I never understand how people can go someplace looking for a S.O. It's just so weird to me.
I met my current SO on a MUD (text-based roleplaying game) I used to play a while back. It's funny how we met, I was a low-level paladin (holy knight) and I had wandered into some scary monster's lair and got myself killed, lost all my stuff. I was sitting in the inn crying about it when in walks this uberpowerful antipaladin (really evil knight) and he asks me what's wrong. He felt bad for me and got my stuff back (not very evil is it, LOL). We started chatting about rl and got to be friends, I got this huge crush on him and a few months later I worked up the nerve to tell him, thinking I would be completely rejected.
We've been together ever since. Though the long-distance thing has been killing me (he's Australian and I'm a New Yorker), I think it's been worth it. He's visited and all the chemistry we had on the MUD is there twice as much when we're together irl. Right now we are trying to figure something out, he was originally going to try to move here but now I'm not so sure with the way the election went. Hell we might just call it a day and go to Canada. :P

...if you have any interest in moving to Australia, but your partner does have the right to sponsor you for immigration into this country. It's called the interdependant visa. If you go to the Australian immigration Web site ( http://www.immi.gov.au/), you should be able to find all information. :)

We corresponded via email and IM for several months. She was on the left coast, I was living in VA. I flew out to meet her and asked her to marry me. She relocated to the east coast 11 months after we met.
I have met several people on line, and have a few have become dear friends.

Sapph and I met online in a chat room almost five years ago.
We chatted for a while over Instant Message, but then she had to leave. The last thing she said to me was, if I ever got to SF to look her up.
I guess neither of us really thought it would go anywhere, especially considering I (at the time) was an Aussie visiting the U.S. But thanks to a friend (another person I had met online) she helped me get to SF where I contacted Sapph.
Now, we have been together almost five years. Our relationship is solid, even though we have the barrier of immigration working against us.
The day will come when we will be able to begin our life together properly without ever having to worry about immigration again. And that day can't come soon enough for me.

on AOL... I don't use AOL anymore, and probably wouldn't recommend it now. We went to the same chatroom and ended up chatting for several hours a night. Neither of us intended to date online...it just happened. :)
I'm new, so I couldn't vote...
