Cyndi Lauper to open homeless shelter for LGBT youth

Cyndi Lauper is proving girls do more than just “wanna have fun.” They also fight for causes close to their heart.

Lauper, according to DNAinfo, plans to open a homeless shelter in Harlem in New York City for lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual youth.

“Kids are coming out in greater numbers as they see themselves accepted and represented on TV and in movies, but they’re still being kicked out of their homes or running away and living on the streets,” Lauper said in a statement.

Lauper – who is working on the project with her publicist, Lisa Barbaris, and Colleen Jackson, West End Inter generational Residence executive directors – plans to raise money for the project through her True Colors Fund.

There are roughly 3,000 to 8,000 homeless LGBT kids in New York City according to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

But I have to tell you all:

A year and a half ago when the DNC was in town...we had her at our venue. She was opening for Melissa Etheridge. It was an event for HRC.

She was just horrible all day. Unbelievably rude (and her young son was over the top insulting people all day). She was crazy high maintenance and she wasn't even the headliner. She made the day difficult for every one. Not nice. Not friendly...out and out mean. I was a long time fan until that day. I literally had a crush on her for 20+ years. She lost all that from me in one day.

Melissa Etheridge on the other hand was awesome. So friendly. Talked to her for a good ten minutes (her Dad was my cousins music teacher in Leavenworth in the early '80's). She is such a kind, generous person. So down to earth. So easy to work with.

If you had sat and watched the whole day of production...you never would have known Melissa was even on the bill. Ms. Lauper just stiff armed her way over the whole production and made everybody's day miserable.

7. Well, you know, that's show biz...

Cyndi isn't the first and she won't be the last. I know you had a personal encounter with her, so obviosuly you know what she's like, but I, for the most part, don't want to know what celebrities are like in real life...just enjoy the talent and leave it at that.

As for melissa, I have no use for her Rick-Warren-loving ass.

8. Yes...

in my job, I learn who the asshole musicians are and who are the nice ones. And it can be a bummer when a musician you like turns out to be a jerk. Have to say though, the vast majority are usually fine around production. I also have to say, in 15 years, she was close to the worse. I actually can't think of anybody ruder that I've worked with. Jackson Browne was kind of a jerk. But he didn't take it out on everybody working.

Ringo Starr was one of the nicest. It was years ago, I was his Runner for the day. I drove him and his wife and his assistants around from early in the day...and after the show (we needed a police escort because of a death threat), late into the night. He was a laugh riot and really warm hearted. Really a fantastic man.

14. Chalk it up to a bad day, everything I've seen from her screams super caring human. You state you

adored her for decades, so you clearly have never heard anything bad about her before your reported bad day around her. So just chalk it up to a rushed day, one time event, where her annoying boy was bugging everyone - maybe her too, and who knows if she was dealing with crap from her husband, other support staff, illness, etc. Everything I've ever seen from her says her true colors are loving towards all, and she spends tons of time helping people she doesn't know. We all love our faves to be ready to talk to us, but sometimes there's things going on in their lives where they aren't accessible to what we want. But, alas, I'm sure you realize there's far too many stories of her being great to make the few days she's less than nice to fans be something that seems accurate in reflecting who she is.

And as for the GLBT home for youth - wow.

I've wondered whatever possessed her to be part of that fiasco . . . but maybe she's just trying to win some megabucks for her favorite charity . . . and if it's a home for LGBT youth, I certainly can't criticize her . . . go, Cindy! . . .

Rocker Cyndi Lauper has taken her gay advocacy to NBC's Celebrity Apprentice.

The 56-year-old Grammy-winning singer is playing Donald Trump's Apprentice for her LGBT charity, True Colors Fund of Stonewall Community Foundation.

“As a longtime and outspoken advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality, I felt the need to do something bold to bring everyone together to celebrate the LGBT community,” Lauper says on the group's website.

“Over the past few decades, the LGBT community has made tremendous strides, but so much more work still needs to be done. We just need to look to the recent passage of Prop 8 in California or the hate crimes that still occur all too often to know that this is the truth.”

“But, what I also know to be the truth is that if we all stand together in solidarity we can overcome the obstacles still in front of us,” she adds.

Working with the True Colors Tour, the charity has raised over $200,000 over the past 2 years for gay rights groups such as the Human Rights Campaign, CenterLink and PFLAG, the support group for parents and friends of gay men and lesbians.

And a very underrated idea. At least in my research, this is an aspect of the gay experience that isn't frequently addressed. The focus is usually on marriage, adoption, DADT and the like, but we can't forget how often gays are ostracized from their friends and family. Way to go Cyndi!
