N.Y. Medical College allows new gay student group

VALHALLA — What's in a name?
The right to organize, if you're a gay student at New York Medical College.
A year after the school banned a gay student group because it violated the institution's Catholic traditions, the school has sanctioned another group with a similar mission but without the words "gay" or "lesbian" in its name.
The new group, called "People of Every Orientation Protecting Liberty and Equality in Medicine," said in a mission statement recently approved by the college that it will work to "educate both current and future physicians on the special health care needs of GLBT patients."
The group that the school banned last year, called "Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender People in Medicine," said in its mission statement that its purpose was to "educate and inform the NYMC community of the health needs of the GLBT community."
College spokeswoman Donna Moriarty said the two groups are not the same.
Joel Ginsberg, executive director of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association... said the group that was banned and the one that was sanctioned essentially are the same.
