| Support Brokeback Mountain!! |
|
Hi, I was lucky enough to be the projectionist at the final night of the Denver Film Festival. Ang Lee was there to present his new film Brokeback Mountain. This film contains 2 incredibly brave performances from Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. They play 2 cowboys who spend a summer herding sheep on Brokeback Mountain. While there they fall in love and end up meeting a few times every year on that same mountain. The film is one of the first I have ever seen outside a GLBT film festival to tackle this subject with such open honesty. To be honest I found the movie a bit slow but I am an action/sci-fi junkie so this wasn't really my cup of tea. That said the movie opens this weekend and needs your support. There are probably going to be groups protesting the movie's honest portrayal of gay sex and love and we need to make sure it does some business at the box office so films like this continue to get made. Oh and if you go bring some tissues. It's a 3 hankie flick for sure.

It doesn't open here in Kansas City until Jan. 6. Whaaaaaa!
But I do intend to be in line for tickets on the first day (and my evil inner-diva is hoping some fundie comes to thump his or her bible in my face about it ... but that's another story).
I finally tracked down a copy of the original story and read it last week. It was the first time in years that I cried while reading a book (in this case, the last 10 pages or so). I even cried when I was surfing the film's web site and found the iconic image of the book translated to the screen: two shirt, one tucked inside the other, hanging on a single hanger under a postcard of Brokeback Mountain.
For a story that never uses the word "gay," it cuts directly to the heart of not just the gay, but the human experience, too. This is a universal story for anyone who's ever found out how lonely life can be when you can't be true to your own nature.

| 3. It's very much on my must see list.... |

I saw the preview with Pride and Prejudice and really wanted to see it.
Lucky you... I'd give three toes or a finger to have listened to Ang Lee.

:applause:
PS: I'm not just going to support it. I'm trying to get a group together. Anyone want to meet up in SF for a "Brokeback Mountain" filmgoing party?

Maybe I can get a group from my LGBT Democratic club to go and then we can find a coffee shop to sit around in and discuss the film afterwards.

VERY much looking forward to seeing it. I'm sorry to say I just now read Annie Proulx's wonderful story the film is based on.
I understand the film could do VERY well around Oscar time. Which means even bigger boxoffice.

| 12. Friday's opening is in "limited release" |
|
So unless you are in a major city, don't look for it at your local multiplex or art house until after the first of the year. The opening Friday is to put the film into contention for the Oscar race and to build up word-of-mouth about it.
