Israeli Gays Fight Supreme Court Appointment

The expected appointment of a social conservative to Israel's Supreme Court has drawn the ire of LGBT civil rights groups.

The government is expected to name Prof. Ruth Gavison to the high court.

Gavison has become a lightening rod for gays and other liberals in the Jewish state.

In an open letter to Justice Minister Tzipi Livni prominent members of the LGBT community, including several openly gay politicians, have raised concerns about Gavison's positions on civil rights.

"To the gay community, Gavison's declared opinions represent a clear and present danger to the areas in which, with much work, partial equality has been obtained for men and women in the community," the letter states.
