DNA Shows Chicago Gay Killings Not Related

The murders of two gay Chicago men whose bodies were found in their apartments only blocks from each other are not linked police say. DNA evidence from the two crime scenes does not match and police say there is a high probability the crimes were carried out by different killers.

The body of Brad Winters was found in his North Side apartment in August 2003. Kevin Clewar was killed in March 2004. Both men had been beaten and stabbed repeatedly. Police believe both victims brought their killers home from a Halsted Street Bar.

The killings of Winters and Clewar are among six gay killings in the city. Five of the murders occurred on the North Side in the past year, leaving residents of the mostly gay neighborhood fearing a serial killer was on the loose.

1. I don't know what's worse -- a serial killer targeting gays or

multiple killers of gays.

I'm not gay myself, but have been thought to be gay by aquaintences. Probably because I love the theater, particularly musical theater, and I don't date -- a long story involving two failed marriages. Funny thing is, I'm never hit on by gays but only questioned by straights.

If I lived in Chicago, I'd be nervous.

2. The suspects were allegedly brought home from bars.

So, if you don't go to the gay bars, I think you're safe in terms of these crimes.

3. Chicago is in general a gay friendly place.

In terms of anti-discrimination law, and also most people's attitudes.

But no amount of law is going to make it safe to pick up strangers, and that's not just a gay issue.

4. Another reason why we need to take more of a focus on responsible dating

and relationships. Yeah, yeah, I know I'm "sex negative" for suggesting that such dangerous routes to companionship should be carefully thought about. :P
