Yes, I was part of the first large scale trial. I was five.

I'd already had polio, but my mother signed me up for every trial she could find because she didn't want me to get it again, she being unclear on the concept of lifetime immunity after a viral infection.

I also tested the oral vaccine.

Even back then, it was first tested on healthy adult volunteers, then on children.

Ethics have changed, thank goodness.

Catholic schools, because it was felt that they could keep better track of the kids. As I recall, they mass vaccinated 2nd graders and 3rd graders, only the 2nd graders didn't get the real thing. I attended one of the Catholic schools that participated. My older sister was in the 2nd grade control group, I was only in kindergarten. Several years ago I went to my library and looked at microfilm of the NYTimes the day the success of the vaccine was announced. It was HUGE news. I had not understood how incredibly important it was that there was now a successful vaccine for polio until I read those articles.

Demand at least a modicum of scientific evidence to confirm the neurological safety of the entire vaccination regimen. Do not succumb to faith-based medicine.
